Overview

If you are looking for a testing trek that may well take you out of your comfort zone at times this trek is for you. Gokyo Ri Renjo La Pass Trek takes you away from the well-known Everest Base Camp trail off the beaten track and brings you face to face with some of the highest peaks in the world. The trail is strenuous at times so you do need to have a good level of fitness. The rewards are many with some of the finest mountain vistas anywhere in the world. A spectacular high-altitude trek to stunning Gokyo crossing the Renjo La Pass into the Thame Valley with unsurpassed views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and other ice-clad monsters. In fact, many seasoned trekkers to Nepal rate the Gokyo Renjo La trekking route as the best to do in Nepal.
Following a less-trodden gives you a true feeling of wilderness. The ideal times to visit are Spring (March–May) and autumn (September – November) The weather during these months tends to remain stable with clearer views.
The Gokyo Renjo La Pass trekking journey begins with a thrilling mountain flight to the tiny mountain airstrip at Lukla the major gateway to the Everest region. Meet our trekking team and sort the gear before making our way along the banks of Dudh Koshi River to Phakding and onto Namche Bazaar. Namche is one of the most attractive settlements in the Khumbu region which offers restaurants, cyber, bakeries, ATMs, and more. Spend one more night for acclimatization. We take the opportunity to make short acclimatization treks up to Khumjung, a lovely Sherpa village above Namche, and to The Everest View Hotel from where there are wonderful panoramic views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawche, and Kwangde Then on to the village of Dole and Machhermo that leads us to Gokyo Valley. On the way, look for rare wildlife species such as musk deer, wild mountain goat, snow leopard, mountain hawk, and others.
The Khumbu; Gokyo Valley houses a spectacular assortment of alpine lakes and supreme mountains. A pre-sunrise hike to Gokyo Ri ensures an unparalleled panoramic view of Mt. Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,156m), Cho Oyu (8,201m), Makalu (8,585m), Ama Dablam (6,82m), Thame Peak and other. A rubble-covered vast Ngozumpa Glacier at the foot of Cho Oyu is hugely impressive.
Prepare yourself for challenging Renjo La Pass (5,345m), another striking viewpoint on the Everest Renjola pass trek which offers yet another surreal view of the Himalayas. Crossing Renjo La Pass is the most challenging part of the trek; we climb at a steady pace to avoid any effect of altitude. From the pass, we descend down to Thame, then trek back to Lukla to catch a flight back to Kathmandu.

  • Day 1 - Arrival in Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport

    One of our team will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport, to escort you to the designated hotel, After hotel-check in, we will go through your tour in further detail. The rest of the day is free for you to explore bustling Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu, Accommodation: Hotel

  • Day 2 - Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2860), 30 minutes flight and trek to Phakding. Walking 3 hrs

    Early in the morning, we transfer to the domestic airport for the flight to Lukla (2,860m), A great 30-minute flight with spectacular hills, rivers, and mountains Once we reach Lukla, your trek leader will introduce you to the team. It is an easy day towards Phakding (2,640m). It is 3 hours easy walk along the banks of Dudhkoshi Valley, crossing suspension bridges and passing through cultural villages. After we cross the suspension bridge over Thado Koshi River, we get a view of Kusam Kanggru (6,367m) – one of the toughest mountains to climb. The trail continues towards Ghat (2,590m) we pass many Mani (prayer) walls to reach the picturesque village of Phakding. Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • Day 3 - Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m). Walking 6-7 hours

    The trail today follows up the Dudh Koshi Valley, hiking through the pine forest, and crossing the river twice via small suspension bridges before reaching the village of Monjo. Monjo is the entrance gate of the Sagarmatha National Park. After entering the park there is a slight climb to Jhorsalle, the trail passes waterfalls with a lot of biodiversity on the way. We are rewarded with our first glimpse of Kusum Kanguru (6369m) Thamserku (6608m), Everest (8848m), and Nuptse (7879 m). A steep climb up to the beautiful large village of Namche Bazaar (3440m) a buzzing center of trade where many tradespeople come to haggle and sell their wares. Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • Day 4 - Acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar. Walking 4-5 hours

    We spend a day here allowing our systems to get used to the higher altitude. Set in a beautiful natural amphitheater, Namche Bazaar is one of the most attractive settlements in the Khumbu region. We take the opportunity to make short acclimatization treks up to Khumjung, a lovely Sherpa village above Namche, and to The Everest View Hotel from where there are wonderful panoramic views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawche, and Kwangde. Plenty of time to pick up on the atmosphere Namche provides. Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • Day 5 - Namche Bazaar to Dole (4080m). Walking 6-7 hours

    On our journey from Namche Bazaar to Dole, we get to explore abundant rhododendrons, pheasant mountain goats, and musk deer. The uphill hike to Dole consists of long granite staircases built into cliffs. A panoramic view of several peaks; including an impressive Ama Dablam is the major highlight of the day.   • Day 6 - Dole to Machhermo (4410m). Walking 4 hours

    Dwarf vegetation confirms the altitude; trek gradually to minimize AMS risks. You will rise to scenic ridges that overlook the valley’s summer grazing Kharkas; tantalizing Cho Oyu appears ahead; Kangtega and Thamserku stand south of the valley. Machhermo is a picturesque village nestled in a broad valley below the moraine. Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • Day 7 - Machhermo to Gokyo (4780m). Walking 5 hrs

    On the 7th day of our Everest Gokyo Renjola Pass trekking we will reach Gokyo Valley. After breakfast, we walk from the basin to a ridge; where the south face of the mighty Cho Oyu – Ghyachung Kang Glacier field starts to come into view. We walk gradually downhill to the river and at Pangka (4,390m), a second path from the south joins the trail before it climbs to the side moraine.
    There are six small lakes on the western side of the moraine. We hike along the edge of Longponga Tsho (4,690m) and Taboche Tsho (4,710m). A final 30 min challenging hike brings us to Dudh Pokhari, set in a horseshoe of high peaks. Gokyo village is nestled above it on the side of the moraine. The last three lakes lie further up the valley which are visible from ridges above the valley.

  • Day 8 - Hike to Gokyo Ri (5367m) in the morning and free afternoon. Walking 4 hours

    A pre-sunrise climb up to the Gokyo Ri viewpoint starts after a short walk around the lake. We start early to avoid the mid-morning cloud, it takes around two hours to reach the summit. The summit offers superb views of the broad, rubble-covered Ngozumpa glacier (Nepal’s longest glacier) and the hugely impressive peaks including Cho-Oyu (8,201m), Ghyachung Kang (7,952m), Nuptse (7,861m), Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m) and Makalu (8,463m). The southern view is crowned with Cholatse, Taboche, Thamserku, Kangtega, and Kusum Kangru, and numbers of 6,300m unnamed peaks. After time to take in the magnificence around us we, descend back to Gokyo Village to enjoy a free afternoon: exploring the village and wandering around the lake. Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • Day 9 - Gokyo Valley to Lungden (4610m) via Renjo Pass (5,345m). Walking 7 hours

    We start today with a gentle climb uphill over a lush grassy area. The trail gradually becomes steeper and more challenging on the way to the pass. From the top of the pass, we are rewarded with an outstanding vista. Views of Rolwaling, Tengi Ragi Tau Mountain, and Small Remro Lake to the west whilst Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Gyachung Kang, and Gokyo Lakes crowd the eastern horizon. We trek through Dudh Pokhari Lakes and climb down through beautiful meadows towards the Bhote Koshi Valley to hike beside the river on our way to Lungdeng. Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • Day 10 - Lungden to Thame (3800m). Walking 4 hours

    It is an easy day so we can walk at a leisurely pace to Thame. Nestled at 3,800m where we have plenty of time to explore the ancient Thame Monastery and experience traditional Buddhist practices. We also soak up the fascinating culture of the Sherpa people at Thame. Accommodation: Guesthouse

  • Day 11 - Thame to Namche Bazaar (3440m). Walking 4 hours

    After breakfast, we continue our journey towards Namche with the backdrop of mountains along the way. We have time to soak up and explore Sherpa village culture and the surroundings.

  • Day 12 - Namche Bazaar to Lukla via Phakding. Walking 7 hours

    The majority of today is spent on a trail descending on our way back to Lukla. We need to be careful of the scattered rocks on the trail. We follow the same route that we used previously while ascending Namche Bazaar. As we reach Lukla, we celebrate with the team, bid farewell to our porters, and take a well-deserved rest in a cozy hotel.

  • Day 13 - Flight: Lukla to Kathmandu
