Overview

An ever-popular tourist destination, the Philippines has progressed in achieving gender equality in education and made major improvements in health such as water, sanitation and reduced tuberculosis rates. But social and economic inequality and regional disparity remain. In late 2013, the country was devastated by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). More than 6,300 people died and almost 1.5 million were hurt or left homeless. Rebuilding and recovery continues.

Developing World Connections volunteers work in Cebu City on Cebu Island. Cebu City has a population of almost one million and is considered the second city of the Philippines after the capital of Manila. Cebu has a young population, with a median age of 20. About one-quarter of the people there have completed high school.

All DWC projects are of great benefit to a part of the population at great risk and struggling just to put food on the table. Opportunities to connect with the local people are numerous and rewarding. You’ll participate in building a future for people who have little. You’ll work alongside like-minded volunteers who are also passionate about travel and giving others a hand up, not a hand out.
