Overview

The Amigos de Jesús family is a sanctuary of hope, healing and transformation in service to vulnerable children. Amigos de Jesús is a home and bilingual school in Honduras for 150 wonderful and loving children. Located on 100 acres of rural farmland, our “Hogar” (home) has 13 homes for children, residences for our staff and volunteers, our bilingual school, Catholic chapel and working farm.

Founded in 1997 by Christine and Anthony Granese and Father Dennis O’Donnell, Amigos de Jesús provides a loving, safe environment for children to grow and learn.

朋友de耶稣volunteers work and live alongside our Honduran staff and children. They contribute to the transformation of each of our children with their energy, creativity, commitment, teamwork and unconditional love for our children.

朋友de耶稣volunteers don’t come for a job, they come because they are called to love our children. Each volunteer does this in a unique way while embodying the Amigos de Jesús Family Values:

1. Imitate the attitude and behavior of Jesus Christ

2. Aspire toward self-sustainability

3.. Be disciples of the children

4. Find hope

Who you are:

Our volunteers are humble, love unconditionally, enjoy children, and can laugh at themselves. They are collaborative team players, forgive easily and don’t hold a grudge. Volunteers are flexible and open, follow through on commitments, can handle challenging living conditions, suspend judgment and assumptions and love to learn from others.

What you bring:

Volunteers bring a commitment to faith-based service in an intentional community. They bring an openness to participate in the Catholic spirituality of the community and home, Spanish fluency and/or a willingness to attend in-country Spanish language school to become fluent (4-8 weeks prior to the start of service). They have the ability to serve a 13-month commitment (not including language school) beginning in either February or July. They have a college degree or equivalent work experience and are at least 21 years of age. Volunteers have positive mental and physical health.

How we will care for you:

朋友de耶稣offers an extensive orientation, a few retreats per year, room and board in a community house, a monthly stipend, and health insurance. Amigos also offers on-site support and supervision, job training, 3 weeks vacation, 2 evenings per week set aside for community time and a re-entry retreat after service.

What you will do:

Volunteers all have a primary job in the areas of child care, education or administration. Placements in the school are currently the most common. Job placement is a mutual discernment process based on volunteers’ skills and interests along with the needs of the Amigos de Jesús family. Volunteers spend much of their out of work time including evenings and weekends with the children.
